In 1913, the sego lily was selected as the emblem of the Relief Society. The sego lily, a flower that grows wild in Utah, was selected because of it’s usefulness in sustaining life along pioneer settlements. After Mormon crickets destroyed the crops of early settlers, Native Americans taught settlers how to eat the flower's bulbs raw, boiled or roasted.

The beautiful flower is an appropriate symbol of purity, beauty, patience through winter and darkness, triumph over adversity, and storing of strength for the time of blossoming.
