We have done a Teacher Appreciation Night for the past two years and they have both been wonderful. We've done it on a stake level with the public affairs committee being in charge, but on the ward level would work just as well.
The youth are asked to write an essay about their favorite teacher which is turned into the committee. The teachers are then invited to the Appreciation Night. At the program which was held in the chapel, we have an opening song (Teach Me To Walk In The Light) and opening prayer. Then we have a speaker who gives a brief talk on the importance of education and why the church values it so much (The glory of God is intelligence, etc.) Then we have a musical number by one of the youth.
The students are then asked, one by one, to bring their teachers up and to read the essays they wrote. The essay (which has been nicely bound), a plaque of appreciation, and a rose are then presented to each teacher. At that time, the teacher is given time to say a few words if they desire. Most do. Only one didn't this year. The teachers who come are obviously truly touched. There's always lots of tears....and some laughter as teachers and students tell stories about each other.
This year, we then had another musical number (a duet by a brother and sister who sang "How Will They Know" which was absolutely beautiful and a perfect song for the evening)
We then have a closing prayer and move into the cultural hall for refreshments. Just a note: As you know, we don't normally clap in the chapel.......one teacher had the following remark, "I'm a conductor. I'm used to applause!" So everyone clapped for him. I think it would have been better to set the whole thing up in the cultural hall...or at least explain to everyone why we don't clap.
