LDS Primary Music Ideas

A counselor I once had in Primary came up with a brilliant idea to get the children involved in leading the music for singing time. (We would let the children know ahead of time that the most reverent would be chosen to help with Singing Time.)
She created an "Elephant Head" from
a colorful piece of poster board, and cut a hole where the nose would be. She then took a contrasting/complimentary colored nylon stocking and attached it to the back of the head where the toe portion was sticking through the hole. (See my crude illustration.)
Each child that was chosen to lead a song would stick their hand and arm into the stocking from the back side of the poster board. The children all wanted to get a chance to lead the song, so we brought our "elephant friend" back several times to visit.
Another idea we used to get the children to sing was to make it a game of "Hot & Cold". The instruction was that one child would be chosen to be it and would leave the room. An object was chosen and hidden somewhere in the room, and the remaining children could only let "it" know where to find the item by singing. They would sing louder when
"it" was close, and would sing softer when "it" was farther away. We usually got even the boys who hated to sing to join in on this "game".

The Singing Bee I just saw a
The Singing Bee
I just saw a show on CMT called The Singing Bee. I have adapted their game show for one of those "All-Music-Time" Sharing Times. It would take the entire time but I think it could work.
The Singing Bee
NEEDED: Bell or some noise-maker.
Choose a small group of children to be the “House Band” (could also be the teachers). They sing the song when directed by the music leader. An assigned judge, who has the music in front of them, acts as judge.
Divide the group into 2, 3, or 4 teams. One person at a time from each team competes on behalf of the team for each round except the final round where several children from each team will compete.
ROUND 1: NEXT LINE – 5 POINTS
The House Band sings the song (DOES NOT NEED TO START AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG) until the music leader cuts them off then the person competing for their team must sing the next line (word for word). The judge will ring the bell if the wrong word is sung. The team they’re on receives 5 points for their team if they get the line correct.
ROUND 2: RANDOM SHUFFLE – 8 POINTS
The House Band sings the song (DOES NOT NEED TO START AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG) until the music leader cuts them off. All the words are on the board in a mixed, scrambled order. The child must sing the next line correctly (word for word). The judge will ring the bell if the wrong word is sung. The team receives 8 points for their team if they get the line correct.
ROUND 3: SING THE CHORUS – 12 POINTS
The House Band sings the verses and the child sings the chorus. They receive 12 points for their team if they get the entire chorus (word for word) correctly. The judge will ring the bell if the wrong word is sung. The team receives 12 points for their team if they get the line correct.
ROUND 4: THREE STRIKES AND YOU’RE OUT – TOP TWO TEAMS IN FINALS
In rapid fire, 1 line is sung by the House Band. A child from each team must sing the next line (word for word). Go back and forth between the two teams having a different child compete each time. If the team has three strikes, they’re out. The team left standing is the winner.
